Responsible AI in focus: Denmark’s new digitalization strategy

Denmark is a digital pioneer – and digital technology development has not only changed the society, but also created a foundation for economic growth, productivity, innovation and digital infrastructure. To crystallise Denmark´s technological standing and establish a framework for securing the digital future as a global tech leader, the Danish government introduced a ground-breaking digitalization strategy on 16 November 2023.

Implementation of 25 Initiatives

The strategy contains 25 initiatives that will be realised over the next four years, spanning from 2024 to 2027. In total, the government has committed an investment of 800 million DKK, to areas such as Artificial Intelligence, automation and digitalization of small and medium sized companies, efficient green transition through digital solutions, strengthening digital competencies across society, international and regulatory framework conditions.

Artificial Intelligence in Focus

Notably, the new strategy places a strong emphasis on the Tech sector and Artificial Intelligence. The government will allocate 55 million DKK to a strategic Artificial Intelligence initiative. The aim of the strategic AI initiative is to set a strategic direction and articulate a vision for how Denmark as society, intends to leverage artificial intelligence.

Additionally, a significant allocation of 17 million DKK has been announced towards a “Regulatory Sandbox” for Artificial Intelligence. The primary intent behind this initiative is to strengthen the support system for companies and authorities, offering practical guidance on the regulation and utilization of Artificial Intelligence solutions.

Foreign investors can benefit from the strategic initiatives within the field of AI, as the framework for a responsible use of the technology puts Denmark at the forefront in this area. With the regulatory sandbox there is an opportunity to tap into a close collaboration with public authorities to test and develop AI solutions that can be utilized internationally.
